NPR’s Steve Inskeep and David Green review presidential speeches seeking support for unpopular wars in the past. (Morning Edition 12/10/07.) They note the long rhetorical tradition of leaders telling Americans that a far greater danger awaits if the president doesn’t get his way, be it more funds, more troops, weapons systems, or whatever. When heard from a historical perspective, you get a feel for how calculated it all is. Listen to the clip. It is amazing to listen to Richard Nixon explaining to Americans how as South Vietnamese troops get stronger American troops can pull out. To turn that into a soundbyte, just say, “When Iraqis the Vietnamese stand up, Americans can stand down.”
