Republicans Call Coulter Slur Inappropriate, Offensive

It took more than a day, but three of the Republican campaigns managed to denounce Coulter’s anti-gay slur at CPAC after a firestorm of reaction from the blogosphere and activist groups. The New York Times has an article that quotes McCain, “wildly inappropriate;” Giuliani, “completely inappropriate…no place for such name calling…;” and Romney, who comes closer to nailing it with, “offensive.” No quotes from Brownback, Huckabee, or Cheney were supplied.

McCain’s hands were generally clean as he had not attended CPAC. Romney had the most to answer for, since he had introduced Coulter and she had endorsed him, though perhaps not exclusively.

Coulter, asked for a reaction to Republican criticism, replied with a joke, apparently not addressing the offensive nature of the slur.

Coulter has in the past used the anti-gay slur (faggot, for those who haven’t heard), and suggested various democrats were somehow defective, by suggesting they were gay, thus in the same breath painting gays as somehow defective.

Her past attacks were made in talk show and interview formats, where casual, if offensive, speech doesn’t carry the same freight. In those settings she largely gets away with sounding ignorant or trashy. At CPAC, Coulter was delivering prepared remarks for a national audience, from the same stage as the Vice President and the leading candidates for the Republican nomination. Incredibly, Coulter behaved as if she did not know the threshold for civility would be higher in that setting.

We’ll see if she has been damaged by this episode as Republicans who want to protect their credibility demonstrate whether they’ll share a mic or a stage with her in the future.

Coulter’s remarks were inexcusably offensive and do more to damage her cause than to help it. A sad byproduct is that all Republicans and/or Conservatives are tarred with the same brush.

Ms. Coulter has the freedom of speech to say whatever she damned well pleases, offensive or not. We, on the other hand have the freedom to object to such speech. It can be dome through e-mails, op-eds, blogs or, more effectively, by not purchasing her products or attending her events.

I am an Ann Coulter fan, but this time she shot from the lip and has damaged her reputation as a responsible voice and advocate for Conservatism.

    Thank you!

you are a fan of Coulter? She damaged her reputation
a s a responsible advocate for conservatisim? Let’s see now: She is a blatant lier who exudes hatred and intolerance of others, while demanding the right to
have her falsehoods accepted as thruth.
She wants to deny everyone whith whom she disagrees
the right to speak, and condemns all who expose the Criminal behaviour of a “conservative”. She has the audacity to call Liberalisim a religion , while religiously following hateful tenets which are sooo.. unchristian. I like to remind all that Jesus admonished us to be LIBERAL with everyone in our dealings with them; letting God be the judge of their actions, not we.
You sir or madam, need to become a fan of thruth, not Ann Coulter, even if sometimes it be not pleasant.

If anyone makes a any kind of slur which may cause friciton within the country…should try being tactful and less obtussive in their citings! I am not for gay marriages or being gay…but that is my opinion and i don’t feel it is up to me to make sure that other people feel the same way that i do. This has been going on since biblical days and as we have noticed..is making another sodom and gommorah. As God has done in the past..he will do again..we are in no position to pelt stones or call names when we are guilty of sin in many other ways. I am sorry she wasn’t raised better than that…but many people aren’t..or their ignorance and stupidity wouldn’t show up so vibrantly!
